Fields of Honor & The Strongest Fortress
The "World War II Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial" in Margraten is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands. During our visit of the cemetery we'll tell you how the cemetery was commence, about the adoption program and we will share the personal stories from our own researches of several soldiers buried here.
After lunch we'll take you for a visit inside and outside of 'The strongest fortress in Europe': Fort Eben-Emael, with a renowned guide.
"Stronger than the Maginot line in France or than the Westwall in Germany", that was the reputation of Fort Eben-Emael in 1939. You will hear about the 10th of may 1940 and the 31 hours of fierce and defensive battle by the Belgium Army, 'shaped charges', 'Sturmabteilung Koch', 'Fallschirmjäger' and 'Fall Gelb' of which the capture of the fortress was part of. It was the first succesfull airborne assault made during World War II!
